Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses. Sinusitis is often the result of infections resulting in chronic inflammation of the sinus cavities. Allergy can contribute to sinusitis by causing swelling of the nasal passages with blockage of sinus drainage. Identification, avoidance and treatment of allergens can decrease the frequency of sinusitis.
People with weak immune systems are more likely to develop bacterial or fungal sinusitis. Some people with allergies can have "allergic fungal sinusitis." Acute sinus disease lasts three to eight weeks. Sinus disease lasting longer than eight weeks is considered chronic.
